Spiritual Direction is an age-old process of listening for and responding to the movement of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Working with an experienced Spiritual Director provides a safe space to discover and grow in relationship and intimacy with God. As you share your sacred story in Spiritual Direction, you are better able to notice the sacred in everyday life experiences. You also can seek guidance and discernment during times of transition, grief, and major life decisions.

When my husband started diaconate studies, one of the requirements to help in the discernment process, was for wives to seek out spiritual direction for one year. I started meeting with Angela Scaperlanda Bujan in the Fall of 2015. Spiritual direction was something new to me, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Spiritual Direction – What is it?

Spiritual Direction is ultimately about seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit as our true spiritual director. Also called Spiritual Guidance, Spiritual Direction is an age-old process of listening to the heart and life stories of another as he or she seeks guidance from the Holy Spirt. With the help of a trained spiritual director, it provides a safe space to explore the spiritual aspect of being human and fosters a deeper relationship with the Divine as experienced and developed through prayer, life experience, study, and relationships.

Spiritual Directors help guide people to a better understanding of their relationship with God by developing their sense of awareness of religious and spiritual experience in the everyday and help people to get a better understanding of what they want from their spiritual lives.

What are the benefits of Spiritual Direction?

Ultimately, spiritual direction helps you to grow in the spiritual life to better understand and act on the intention of the Holy Spirit within your personal life circumstances. The spiritual director provides guidance to help you discover God acting in your life and facilitates your creative, loving response to God. You receive personal input to help keep moving in a positive direction and personal accountability to stay focused and grow in your spiritual life.

What are specific examples of why you may seek Spiritual Direction?

How does Spiritual Direction work?

The privilege and responsibility of a spiritual director is to journey with you as you deepen your relationship with God. The journey takes place in the context of confidential one-on-one or group sessions with your spiritual director. You and your spiritual director will agree on a convenient date, time, and location for meeting, usually once a month for an hour. Sessions can be in-person (if possible) or virtual via video conference or direct phone conversation. What is shared between you is held in confidence.

How do I choose the right spiritual director?

It is important to choose a spiritual director with whom you feel comfortable, safe, and confident. Most spiritual directors have extensive training and formation and are seasoned in the art of spiritual direction. Spiritual directors continue tending the spiritual life by engaging in ongoing education, confidential supervision, and also meeting regularly with a spiritual director. After the first three or four sessions, you are encouraged to evaluate the relationship. Whether your relationship with the spiritual director continues for many years or for only a short period of time, it is very important to be comfortable with the spiritual director you choose.
